Geocaching Event at Ruthven

Author: teamvoyagr

This past Sunday I hosted my first event cache at the Ruthven Historic Site.   I gave a small presentation on geocaching and I set up a closest to the pin challenge.   It was fun watching everyone trying to be accurate.  In the end it was a= participant using an automotive GPS that was closest.  What does that tell you?

The folks at Ruthven set up a great location and a number of attendees enjoyed the tour of the mansion.   I was most happy that the rain held off and we had a great day!  I was also impressed that a few people read my GC profile and commented on it.

I would do three things differently if I host this kind of an event again:

  1. Use a whiteboard to post coordinates of temporary locations at the event.
  2. Drop the travel bug on my car into the event to let people know it is discoverable.
  3. Remind everyone to sign the log book.

You can read the attendee logs on the event page.

Thanks to Marilyn Havelka of Ruthven Historic Park for donating the space and to everyone who attended.

Join me at the the Ruthven Historic site to learn about the GPS adventure sport called Goecaching.  I will have Geocaching demonstrations and games from 13:00-16:00 on Sunday May 23, 2010.

Ruthven Park is a unique historic estate overlooking the Grand River. Experience the mansion and the lifestyle of five generations of the Thompson family. Ruthven Park is the former home of five generations of the Thompson family. Not the newspaper magnet or explorer, but an important family in their own right. With members of the military, actors, businessmen and politicians, the family contributed to the formative years of country and to the building of our nation up until the 1990’s.

Admission to the site is by donation. Attendees of the geocaching event will also receive discounted admission to the historic mansion.
