Geowoodstock IX

In less than 24hrs I start my journey down to Geowoodstock, will I see you there?

I attended last year and had a blast. I hope this year is as much fun. Will cache on my way down tomorrow and spend Friday caching in the area. Saturday at the event, I hope to meet some friends that I’ve only chatted with online. Drop me an email if you are going to be there.

BFL Devilluminati is Over

What an experience. For the three years prior to this year I’ve been attending the annual BFL Boot Camp. I attended this year but not as a cacher. I was one of the organizers of this year’s event. I was excited to have volunteered to prepare a cache and then I realized that as and organizer I wouldn’t be going out on event night to find the caches. For a while I was disappointed that I wouldn’t be trudging through the woods at night in search of an FTF. Then we started beta testing the caches.

This hole experience was very rewarding. I had been to my cache about half a dozen times prior to the event night. My co-builder Bakers Dozen and I were not sure others would find our cache as interesting as we did until it was beta tested. The BFL crew enjoyed the cache which was quite a relief.

The idea of spending seven hours manning the command centre when there were over 100 cachers out there having fun concerned me. I shouldn’t have worried. Me and the other organizers had a lot of fun listening to the stories as people came by to sign the log. A group of us even got to get out there and do a cache we hadn’t beta tested. Even though I had seen the illuminatrix prior to it being placed we still have trouble figuring that one out. It really helps to read the instructions.

We wrapped up the evening at 0400 and I think I could have gone for another couple of hours. That is until I got home. I was asleep shortly after getting home. I’ve been dragging a little bit for the last couple of days. I don’t know if that’s because of the late nights of or the fact that I miss the excitement of getting ready for the BFL Boot Camp. Doesn’t matter how I feel, I know I want to participate next year!

Even if you don’t plan on trying these caches reading the logs can be quite entertaining.

BFL Countdown Begins

The 5th annual BFL Bootcamp event takes place on October 30th. I’ve attended the previous three evenings, they are more than just the event. This year will be the first year that I am placing a cache for the event.

I’m building my cache with Bakers Dozen. We seem to have most of the physical elements worked out. Our write up is going to be a bit of a challenge. We found the location we like and have already placed some parts of the cache. The final element will need to be done in situ to make sure we get the accuracy we need.

By themselves the individual elements of the cache are straightforward. Putting them together in one cache is going to be tricky. I’m looking forward to having someone test it. We have the curse of knowledge. We know how it is supposed to work. First time visitors may not be so lucky.

We have learned one thing in this process. The signalling device needs to be warmed up for best effect. Remember that if you are coming out to the event.

Help Break a Geocaching Record

On 10-10-10, geocachers around the world will join together to try to break the record for the number of accounts to log a geocache in a single day. The current record stands at 56,654. It was set on April 18, 2010.

It’s not the number of logs that are import but the number of accounts that log a cache. All you need to do is find and log a single cache on 10-10-10! It’s a holiday here and I have company but I’ll be getting out to get my one cache. Will you?

Geowoodstock VIII Was a Blast

Well after four days in the US I can say that I have completed the geocaching triad: Original Stash, Last North American Ape cache and Groundspeak Headquarters. Groundspeak is in Fremont now. A rather neat area. I’ll be posting pictures when I return to my office.

I also met Mijaou a geocaching blogger from Sweden. She taught me some Swedish. You’ll find me trying it out in a video she recorded:
