As I approach 1000 geocache finds I’m starting to get a strange feeling come over me.  I’ve never been about the numbers.  Some of my caching friends have in excess of 4000 finds, one even double that.  For me I’ve never enjoyed going out and doing drive by caches just to pad my numbers.   I am finding however that I’m focusing on those zeroes a little more than I used to.

I think part if it for me is peer pressure.  If you hang around cachers that have thousands of finds you start to feel somehow a little inadequate for not having found thousands of caches.  My rational brain tells me not to worry about it but the competitive part of my brain is starting to get engaged.

I’m hoping that once I break 1000 I’ll be able to go back to caching for the fun of it rather than thinking about my numbers.  I know there are many cachers that live and die by there statistics.  That’s not me … well that wasn’t me.  I’ll let you know what happens when I get to 4 digits, it should be sometime near the end of the year.

I have been writing the cachemania blog since 2008. I'm interested in the development of geocaching and the many ways that people play the game.
